Mavis Staples got her start in 1950 singing in churches with her father Roebuck “Pops” and her siblings as The Staples Singers.
Now, more than 60 years later, she’s still singing. Tonight, she’ll be singing at Arizona Musicfest at Highlands Church in Scottsdale, and The Show’s Lauren Gilger got a chance to talk with her ahead of that event.
Over the years, Mavis Staples has become a gospel and soul legend since she was performing protest songs during the Civil Rights Movement like “Respect Yourself” with her family, to coming out on her own with hit albums like "Have a Little Faith."
And, along the way, she’s collaborated with everyone from Bob Dylan to Prince.
Now on her most recent album, 2016’s "Livin’ on a High Note," she’s joined forces with a new generation of musicians, including producer M. Ward and songwriters like Nick Cave, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Neko Case and Aloe Blacc.
