One recent study says American sunscreens don’t measure up abroad.
High-SPF sunscreens in the United States meet national standards for ultraviolet A (UVA) protection.
But, about half do not meet European standards.
Currently, U.S. products only measure SPF based on protection against ultraviolet B rays, which can cause sunburn.
This number doesn’t measure protection against ultraviolet A light, which is linked to aging, wrinkling and skin cancer.
The study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology also says many sunscreens with an SPF of 50 did not meet European Union standards for ultraviolet filters.
