Wednesday is International Women’s Day. And in solidarity around the country, many women are also taking part in “A Day Without A Woman.”
Protests and walk-outs have been planned across the country. One of those protests will take place outside the Arizona Capitol in Phoenix.
Tamara Miller is with the group Desert Dissenters, who is helping to organize the event. She said the protest is part of a call to action for women to reconnect and take charge as well as stand up for all gender-oppressed people.
“That’s the thrust of us getting together, at the Capitol, is to verbally state to each other that were in this together to promote our rights as human beings,” Miller said.
Miller said she’s a major advocate of women’s reproductive rights and said as a nation we have taken these rights for granted. And said, she’s worried about the future of women’s rights here in America.
She said President Donald Trump’s recent reinstatement of the so-called Mexico City Policy, also known to critics as the “global gag rule,” prohibits any involvement with abortion in order for a non-governmental organization to receive funding from the United States for family planning.
“I feel like that gag order is a grave disservice to women abroad. And I’m concerned that, that’s what’s trying to be imposed on women in the United States as well," said Miller.
Miller hopes the “A Day Without Woman” will bring back the momentum of the post-inauguration rallies held across the country.
The event begins Wednesday at noon in front of the Capitol.
