The first trial related to the VA hospital scandal that began in Phoenix has ended with U.S. Magistrate Judge Michelle Burns awarding $2.5 million to veteran Steven Cooper.
He had argued that his now-terminal prostate cancer would have been curable if the VA hospital diagnosed it sooner.
Burns ruled a nurse practitioner who found abnormalities in Cooper's prostate during an exam in 2011 had breached the standard of care by failing to order more testing and refer him to a urologist.
