Gila River Arena opened in 2003.

The Arizona Coyotes continue to look for paths out of Glendale. The NHL commissioner sent a letter Tuesday supporting a bill that would allow tax money to be used for a new arena.

The bill would allow Arizona tax money to be used for about half of the costs of a new Coyotes arena. The team would put up about $170 million toward the arena.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman sent a letter to Arizona legislators making clear his support for the bill. He writes that the Gila River Arena is not capable of supporting a successful NHL franchise, and "the Coyotes cannot and will not remain in Glendale."

In a statement, a Coyotes official echoed the commissioner's sentiments, warning that there could come a point the team won’t "find a path forward in Arizona."

At time of reporting, Glendale officials would not comment on the letter.
