Fire Departments Treating Overheated Spring Training Fans

If you’re in Arizona to enjoy some spring training, chances are you’ve noticed it’s not just the pitchers turning up the heat.

With temperatures hovering near-record highs across the Valley, local fire departments are treating more overheated fans than usual in the past few days.

Peoria Fire Department spokesman Tim Eiden says 15 people were treated for heat-related illness on Monday at the Peoria Sports Complex with four going to the hospital for more treatment.

“These temperatures in the 90s came up on us pretty quickly. And I don’t think people were quite expecting what they got at the ballpark. Three hours in the sun is too long, so if you’re at a baseball game, you need to take frequent breaks,” he said.

Glendale officials say they treated two people Sunday and Monday but only for mild heat-related symptoms.

Eiden suggests frequent water breaks and liberally applying sunscreen.
