"Hillbilly Elegy," a book about white working-class Americans, just marked its 33rd week on the New York Times' best-seller list. It and other political themed books are changing things for booksellers.
Changing Hands Bookstore co-owner Gayle Shanks says a quarter of annual book sales usually come at the end of the year. She said the presidential election changed all that.
“So, we’re selling books like 'Hillbilly Elegy' or Arlie Hochschild’s 'Strangers in Their Own Land,'" Shanks said about post-election sales. “We’ve been selling a book called 'Evicted,' which is a book about poverty in America really.”
Shanks said people are looking for post-election explanation. She said in previous election years, political book sales increased prior to the event. This time, political book sales have gone up after the election.
