Gov. Doug Ducey has signed off on a bill making it easier for people with lapsed teaching certificates to regain their credentials. SB 1057 reduces some of the renewal requirements.
The legislation allows people with teaching certificates that have lapsed between two and 10 years to renew them without any additional requirements adopted by the state Board of Education as long as the teacher has 10 years of full-time experience in the state.
Sen. Gail Griffin sponsored the bill. She says the amended regulations are intended to help several types of teachers get back into classrooms, including those who took a medical leave.
"Teachers that have maybe moved to a different area that are contemplating coming back to Arizona, those that retired young and decided they wanted to come back into teaching and get back into the classroom," Griffin explained. "So the sky's the limit."
The law will go into effect in mid-June.
