NCAA President Mark Emmert Visits ASU

With the men’s college basketball Final Four this weekend in Glendale, the president of the NCAA is in town.

Mark Emmert spoke at ASU’s WP Carey School of Business Economic Club of Phoenix yesterday. He said the 12 days of the tournament bring in approximately 90 percent of the NCAA’s annual revenue.

But with as many as 11 percent of its student athletes from foreign countries, Emmert said schools are concerned about President Trump’s travel ban and other signals coming from Washington D.C.

“Unequivocally, there’s a dampening of enthusiasm around international students in America," Emmert said. "I would contend at a moment where that’s the exact opposite of what we need."

Until the travel restrictions are officially in place, Emmert said the full effects on collegiate athletics in the US are still unknown.

The Final Four is in Phoenix for the first time and in the West for the first time since Seattle hosted in 1995.

On Saturday, South Carolina takes on Gonzaga and North Carolina meets Oregon.
