Steven Jones is accused in the Oct. 9, 2015, fatal shooting at Northern Arizona University.

The trial of the Northern Arizona University student accused of shooting four of his classmates, killing one of them, continues.

Steven Jones has plead not guilty to murder and aggravated assault.

Thursday, the first witnesses took the stand to testify.

Nicholas Piring was one of the students wounded in the shooting. He described the moment he was shot twice jumping over a bush to help this roommate Colin Brough.

“I didn’t know. I didn’t register it until afterwards and I realized that when I saw a bunch of blood, I had been shot…we had been shot,” Piring said.

Brough later died from his injuries.

Prosecutors said the shooting was premeditated murder.

But, Jones’ attorney argues his client was being attacked and was in fear for his life when he ran back to his car, got his gun and opened fire.
