A fugitive former Mexican governor was apprehended over the weekend. The former governor had been linked to at least one real estate investment in the Phoenix area.
Former governor Javier Duarte was taken into custody by police in a resort town, about 120 miles from the Mexican border in Guatemala. The Associated Press reports that the interpol and local authorities took Duarte without incident from a hotel room where he was staying with his wife.
Duarte governed the southern state of Veracruz for close to six years, and he had been on the run for six months, wanted on charges of organized crime. Investigators linked Duarte to multiple properties in the United States, including a $600,000 condominium in Scottsdale.
In a statement, the Mexican foreign relations ministry said it'll seek Duarte's extradition so he can formally face charges here.
