Queen Creek will consider opening smaller residential lots to chickens at its meeting Wednesday evening.
The proposed amendment would allow up to five chickens on lots that are at least 5,000 square feet and ten chickens on lots twice that size. Roosters would only be allowed on lots of at least an acre.
“The vast majority of feedback that we’ve received has been positive,” Town Planning Administrator Brett Burningham said.
He said staff heard from people who wanted to keep chickens or who already were.
The ordinance also includes protections for neighbors who cry foul.
“If there is some type of public nuisance, whether it be noise or odor or some type of negative component, there is the ability for the resident or property owner to contact the town,” Burningham said.
The town already allows chickens on lots larger than 35,000 square feet.
A planning commission has previously recommended the new policy for approval.
