Arizona gun buyers won’t be required to purchase “smart” weapons anytime soon.
Gov. Doug Ducey signed off on legislation this week blocking the state, or any local governments, from establishing “smart” gun requirements on future weapons sales.
The bill effectively blocks cities from independently limiting purchases to only weapons with traceable technology.
Lawmakers, against the ban, argued the “smart” guns’ GPS tracking system protects children from accidentally shooting a weapon.
But, it was that same feature that ultimately bolstered arguments to ban its exclusive sales.
Proponents for the ban argued the technology is not perfected and could potentially violate privacy rights.
Co-authors of the bill said its passage does not limit Arizonans from purchasing “smart” weapons when they are available.
