Protecting A Modern Building Among Prehistoric Artifacts

Late last year, the Painted Desert Community Complex at Petrified Forest National Park was designated a National Historic Landmark. It’s a campus of more than 20 buildings, including a visitor center and gift shop, administrative offices, employee housing and maintenance area.

Well-known modernist architect Richard Neutra designed the complex, and it’s been undergoing a pretty substantial renovation.

On Wednesday, the park will celebrate the National Historic Landmark designation and show off the work done so far on the facilities.

Brad Traver is superintendent of the Petrified Forest National Park.
