The term “nationalism” has taken on questionable — sometimes troublesome — connotations in the public realm in the past year or so.
The word began getting a lot more attention during the course of the 2016 presidential campaign, as some expressed concern about whether nationalism actually meant “white nationalism” and led to a path toward white supremacist philosophies.
In a recent essay called Appreciating the Upside of Nationalism, Steve McIntosh of the Institute for Cultural Evolution argues that nationalism and globalism are “ultimately interdependent.”
