Construction On South Mountain Freeway Means I-10 Closures

Workers have begun construction on the new South Mountain Freeway. That means several closures for Arizona drivers.

The South Mountain Freeway project calls for 40 bridges, including flyover bridges that will connect the new freeway to I-10. Dustin Krugel with ADOT says drivers should be on the lookout for any impacts on their commutes.

"We are going to have a series of closures on westbound I-10 between 51st Avenue and 67th Avenue over the next few weeks, so we can move this heavy equipment across the freeway,” Krugel said.

The construction equipment includes a 100-ton crane and an oversized drill rig. The next expected closure will be on Tuesday, April 25.

For more information on delays and closures, drivers can visit southmountainfreeway.com and sign up for traffic alerts. The 22-mile freeway is expected to be completed by late 2019.
