PTSD An Ongoing Issue For U.S. Firefighters

The Tucson Fire Department is dealing with a tragedy. Last week one of their own committed a murder-suicide at a popular Tucson mall, shocking many of his fellow firefighters.

Violence, suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder are an ongoing issue not just for Tucson, but for other firefighters across the country. Studies have shown up to 37 percent of firefighters may have symptoms of PTSD, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Tucson Fire Department Assistant Chief Joe Gulotta knows the problem well. He said the department has a robust mental-health program so they can recognize when one of their own might need help — but it will always be a challenge.

Gulotta talked about how the department is handling the news.
