Amidst rumors of an executive order to withdraw the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, President Donald Trump spoke with his Canadian and Mexican counterparts to renegotiate the treaty.
In speeches and social media posts, President Trump had been hostile towards Mexico, opposing NAFTA.
But on Wednesday, the tone was different. No tweets or comments, instead a phone call with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.
Earlier that day, some media outlets reported that Trump was planning to cancel the American participation in NAFTA with an executive order.
But according to Los Pinos - the Mexican presidential office - both leaders agreed to modernize and renegotiate the agreement with Canada.
Trade between Mexico, Canada and the United States has tripled since NAFTA took effect in 1994.
