This week, Gov. Ducey signed into law a bill that defines dyslexia and will allow the state Board of Education to create a handbook for schools that outlines ways to identify students with dyslexia and better work with them to improve their reading and comprehension.
Rep. Jill Norgaard introduced the bill. Norgaard says cementing the definition of dyslexia and making sure that educators are equipped to address it is key.
To find out more about dyslexia, and why this kind of legislation is necessary, I asked Sally Shaywitz. She’s a professor of Learning Development at Yale University and the author of “Overcoming Dyslexia.”
Shaywitz also said that there are other states that are implementing early screening in school for dyslexia across the board.
