Original Bashas' In Phoenix Is Closing Its Doors

Customers of one of the oldest supermarkets in Phoenix will have to find a new place to shop for groceries starting this weekend.

The original Bashas' that opened in 1956 on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Osborn Road is officially closing its doors Friday night.

Store manager Harry Evans says it’s a bittersweet and melancholy time for employees and shoppers alike.

"It’s kind of sad, if you think about it. We’re part of the neighborhood. We’re like a neighbor,” Evans said.

The iconic market sits on prime real estate, and plans call for a residential and retail development on the site.

Evans says Phoenix-based Bashas' has gone to great lengths to ensure that every employee who wanted to keep their job could transfer to another store.
