Crews Have A Handle On Two Arizona Fires

Officials say crews are gaining a handle on two fires burning in the state.

A southern Arizona wildfire that started a week ago is now 94 percent contained.

The Sawmill Fire burned about 73 square miles on lands controlled by the Bureau of Land Management and in the Coronado National Forest, stopping over the weekend about 10 miles southeast of the town of Green Valley.

Officials called the efforts a success and said they'll start to release some fire crew members. But hundreds of homes nearby remain under pre-evacuation notices.

The U.S. Border Patrol said Thursday one of its agents was being investigated for possibly starting the fire while off duty and shooting a gun recreationally.

Meanwhile, the Cactus Fire burning northeast of Mesa is now 85 percent contained after it burned a little more than a square mile in the Salt River beds area.

Firefighters, including engines and crews, continue to patrol for hot spots within the fire’s perimeter.
