A mosquito sample in the East Valley has tested positive for the West Nile virus. It’s the first of the season.
After a Mesa mosquito trap tested positive, Maricopa County Environmental Services wants residents to be especially cautious. Spokesman John Dilone says residents should protect themselves from bites and keep mosquitoes from breeding in their yards.
“By removing standing water in potted plants, tires, bird baths and other containers where water may collect. Remove unnecessary clutter. If we have window and door screens, make sure that those are in good repair to keep mosquitoes out of our homes,” Dilone said.
Residents can can also protect themselves from bites by wearing lighter-colored clothing and insect repellent. Most people infected with West Nile will have no symptoms, but about one in five will develop flulike symptoms and may become seriously ill.
