Texas Passes Toughest Immigration Law Since Arizona's SB 1070

Expecting a public backlash, Texas’ Republican Gov. Greg Abbott used social media Sunday night to sign the toughest immigration law since Arizona’s SB 1070.

Unlike Arizona’s original law requiring officers determine whether someone they suspect is in the United States legally, Texas will require police simply ask.

But, the Texas law goes further in that it threatens any sheriff with jail and removal from office if they fail to cooperate with federal agents.

Civil rights attorneys said they will borrow arguments made in Arizona to try and repeal several provisions before the Texas law goes into effect in September.
