A government contractor has finished construction of a new border wall along the international boundary near Naco, Arizona.
The project started in January just days before President Donald Trump took office. The Border Patrol has always noted that this pedestrian fencing consisted of a bollard-style wall 18 feet high. It was planned four years ago and funding was approved in last year’s fiscal budget under former President Barack Obama.
The 7-and-a-half mile stretch of wall has become a celebrated project for the Trump administration as a precursor of more border structures to come. White House spokesman Sean Spicer last week:
"He is using the current bill to get his priorities moving and put it down. To answer the question: It is currently being built in Naco, Arizona; Sunland Park, New Mexico; and we are going to be starting to do this in San Diego; El Paso; and Rio Grande Valley," he said.
Spicer meant Naco. It’s not the concrete wall contractors are currently competing to build, but the Border Patrol says the new fence is a better deterrent to stop illegal border crossings than the old wall it replaced.
