Charlie Levy’s current downtown venues include Valley Bar and Crescent Ballroom. Together, they can hold 800 music fans. His new project, The Van Buren, will hold 1,800.
On Wednesday, Phoenix council members will vote on a $250,000 historic preservation grant. That money, combined with an estimated $3.5 million in private funds, will transform a former car dealership into an entertainment venue at Fourth Avenue and Van Buren Street.
Most recently known as the Phoenix Motor Company Building, the structure, built in 1930, will undergo a complete renovation while preserving its historic nature. This past March, Levy sat down with KJZZ's Sarah Ventre to discuss the growing downtown music scene.
Earlier this year, the City Council approved a zoning change to allow Levy to turn a historic building that served as a church into an arts center at Ninth and Woodland avenues.
