IO Data Centers wants to expand its Phoenix campus.

The Valley’s data center industry is getting bigger with new centers planned in Mesa and Phoenix.

IO Data Centers wants to build a 500,000 square foot facility at 48th and Van Buren streets, just south of its existing campus at the corner of Loop 202 and 48th Street.

On Wednesday, Phoenix council members approved a deal to cover up to $359,000 in public infrastructure improvements. They include widening and improving 48th Street between the northern boundary of IO’s 11-acre parcel and Van Buren Street along with a drainage study.

In Mesa, an undeveloped 56-acre site will be home to DuPont Fabros Technology. The company plans to develop a data center campus on Crismon Road north of Elliot Road.

Companies use the centers to store, process and distribute large amounts of data. According to a 2016 report by Datacenter Hawk, metro Phoenix is the sixth largest data center market in the United States.
