Group Files Referendum To Repeal Private-School Voucher-Expansion Law

A group trying to repeal Arizona’s new voucher expansion law was at the Secretary of State’s Office on Thursday to file an official referendum so they can begin collecting signatures.

Officials with Save Our Schools Arizona need to collect more than 75,000 valid voter signatures to refer the issue to the November 2018 ballot.

Dawn Penich Thacker, a group spokeswoman, said because many signatures end up getting invalidated in the petition process, the goal is to collect about 150,000.

"We realize that this is a big task and we’re up for the challenge because we’ve been really emboldened by the public support," she explained. "We have been overwhelmed by people all over the state wanting to help," Thacker said.

The group has 90 days to collect the needed signatures.
