We know films can be rated R and PG-13, but what about an F-rated film?
It’s a new rating that’s starting to become more widely used in the film industry, and it’s for films that are rated F for Feminist.
The F rating started when Holly Tarquini, director of the Bath Film Festival in England, was putting together her lineup in 2014. I spoke with her via Skype from her home in the U.K., and, she said, at the same time, a report came out that said of the top 100 films that year, only two of them had been directed by women.
The Bechtel Test looks at if a movie has two women on screen who have a conversation with one another about something other than a man.
Exactly, a pretty basic requirement for films to meet, but, most films really don’t meet it.
So Tarquini and her colleague started looking at the Bechtel Test in the films for their festival, but the “F” rating goes beyond just that, she says — it also has to do with who is making the films.
