National Park Service Works To Prevent Suicides In Parks

National parks are a popular summer vacation destination. But not all visits are about seeing natural beauty.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have looked at the rates of suicide in national parks.

In a report from a few years ago, researchers found 286 people attempted suicide inside a national park over a seven year period, an average of 41 per year, but not all of those incidents were fatal.

Sara Newman has looked into this in the past. She’s the director for the Office of Public Health at the National Parks Service.
