A former chapter manager on the Navajo Nation faces 86 tribal criminal charges for stealing more than $1 million.

The Navajo Justice Department accused Priscilla Littlefoot last Wednesday of pocketing a $1 million set aside for scholarships, grazing operations, veterans and capital improvements. The Gallup Independent reports Littlefoot is accused of committing multiple acts of fraud, theft and falsification over several years.

Tribal Attorney General Ethel Branch said the charges reflect a betrayal of trust and stem from a long-running scheme during which Littlefoot abused her position to divert Tuba City chapter funds for her personal use.

The tribe wants Littlefoot to pay back the money stolen.
