New rules go into effect July 1 for paid sick time. And June is crunch time for employers.
Dana Hooper is a partner with Greenberg Traurig. She said Arizona companies need to spend June ramping up their systems for tracking employee time.
“You don’t have to do a thing as an employee in June. All you have to do is show up for work and for every 30 hours that you work, you earn that one hour of leave time," Hooper said. "From the employers perspective you have a lot to do in June.”
Starting in July, Arizona’s Proposition 206 requires employers to track the amount of paid sick time earned by employees, at a rate of one hour per every 30 hours worked.
Employers with less than 15 employees can cap paid sick time at 24 hours per year. The cap for companies with 15 or more employees is 40 hours.
Hooper said penalties for businesses that fail to properly document hours can be up to double the amount of wages left unpaid, plus interest.
