Lobbyists who break the rules in Phoenix could soon face prosecution. On Wednesday, the city council unanimously approved a tougher ordinance.
Lobbyists get paid to influence decisions on things like zoning issues, incentives for developers and multi-million dollar contracts for goods and services.
They’re required to register with the city and disclose gifts to city officials, but several months ago The Arizona Republic reported that current city law has no language detailing how to punish violators.
That will change July 1 when lobbyists who ignore the new ordinance will be given a warning and 15 days to register. Repeat offenders could face fines and possible jail time.
