An increase in the number of people living on the streets has Phoenix city leaders looking to spend millions on outreach services.
The latest count coordinated by the Maricopa Association of Governmentsfound more than 5,600 people experiencing homelessness across the Valley. Of those, more 2,000 were living on the streets. That’s 400 more than last year’s count.
Complaints from business owners and residentsdealing with trash and encampments have also gone up. On Wednesday, the City Council will vote on a five-year contract worth up to $2.5 million. If approved, certified outreach workers from Community Bridges will engage with people on the streets and offer medical, behavioral health and recovery services.
