Political satire is in a renaissance period in the U.S., thanks in large part to the eagerness of writers and comics to take on — and reply to — the Trump administration.
Here in Arizona, that led to the unique appearance on social media of candidate Robert Sedona. He ran for Congress last year and recently declared he’d be in next year’s gubernatorial race.
Sedona claims to be a car dealer — reminiscent of former Gov. Evan Mecham — and wears glasses that bear a resemblance to those that the late Sen. Barry Goldwater had.
But Sedona isn’t a real candidate. In the same vein as satirical characters like Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report, these characters are an amalgam of several character traits.
Robert Sedona is a composite of previous candidates and several points of view. He did our interview in character and I took as straight an approach as I could. I started by asking Sedona why running for office appealed to him.
