The fate of a 120-year-old home in downtown Phoenix will be decided at City Hall on Monday afternoon.
The Clinton Campbell House was slated for demolition just over two weeks ago at a historic preservation hearing. Owners of the property at 357 N. Fourth Ave. successfully made the case that preserving the building, which is in lackluster condition, would cause an unnecessary economic hardship for them.
Historic building expert Roger Brevoort said the historic house is a rarity.
“There’s less than 50 houses now, or buildings, that are 19th century," Brevoort said. "That sort of overrides the fact that it’s deteriorated, it’s in poor condition, but it’s also 19th century.”
The city’s Historic Preservation Office sided with the owners of the building in recommending demolition. Phoenix officials said they generally try to save buildings as old as the Clinton Campbell House but, equal weight must be given to the owners.
The Phoenix Historic Preservation Commission will hear the case Monday at City Hall at 4:30 p.m.
The owner of this property, Glasir Capital Partners, haven't yet responded to requests for comment. But in their request for demolition they submitted to the city, they said that they conducted extensive research before they bought the property to determine if it had historic value, and the city confirmed it was not listed on the National Register or the Phoenix Register of Historic Properties.
