A member of the Arizona Board of Regents has announced his resignation from the board, effective immediately.
Greg Patterson submitted his resignation letter Monday after a rift with Republican state representatives Mark Finchem and Jill Norgaard.
In February, Patterson chided lawmakers over their proposal to trim the role and oversight of the governing body of the state’s three universities.
Patterson secretly recorded the meeting and shared it with others.
Patterson said he didn't want to become a distraction to the state universities' governing board.
Representative Finchem said his disrespectful behavior only confirms that changes are needed at ABOR.
"I think there's a lot that going to need to be done to rebuild trust," Finchem said.
Patterson was appointed to the board by then Gov. Jan Brewer in 2012 and had served as chair since last July.
Bill Ridenour, current vice chair of the board, will become chair on July 1.
