Chandler will soon spend more than $1.2 million to renovate several parks that are more than 20 years old.
“We listen to our residents, as well as doing various park amenity audits,” said Mickey Ohland, Chandler Community Services planning manager. He said the projects have been in the works for about two years.
The City Council approved the construction contracts at its meeting Thursday.
Here’s how it breaks down:
- $312,000 will fund the replacement of Desert Breeze Park’s tennis courts, built in 1996.
- $167,000 will fund the replacement of the San Marcos Basketball Courts, built in 1995.
- $768,000 will replace a crushed gravel walkway, build ramadas, install picnic tables and spruce up the landscaping at Snedigar Sportsplex, built in 1991.
The projects will range from two months to finish the basketball courts to five months to complete the renovations at Snedigar Sportsplex.
“That sports complex is heavily used by soccer and baseball and different groups and so it will be a definite improvement and something I think the citizens will enjoy,” Ohland said.
The money is budgeted as part of Chandler’s Capital Improvement Program. The city estimates it will have renovated or developed 20 parks by the end of the fiscal year June 30.
