More construction is coming to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Council members recently approved four contracts totaling $99.6 million. The money will cover design and construction services to extend the SPHX Sky Train from Terminal 3 to the rental car center.
The extension will include:
- Building two new stations and partially building a third future station.
- Realigning Sky Harbor Circle South.
- Providing a new ramp connection to the I-10 eastbound ramp entrance to Sky Harbor Boulevard.
- Providing a rotary roadway and surface parking areas.
Construction should begin by the middle of next year and the train is expected to be running by late 2021.
According to the city’s request for qualifications, Sky Harbor expects to serve 51 million passengers in 2019 and 58 million by 2024. To accommodate the increase, staff proposed completing stage two of the PHX Sky Train.
The airport posted a flyover video that shows what the extension could look like.
