Goodwin Fire South Of Prescott Grows To 4,400 Acres

The Goodwin Fire south of Prescott that began over the weekend continues to burn and has grown to 4,400 acres.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has closed State Route 69 between Cordes Junction and Prescott because the smoke has reduced visibility.

Tiffany Davila of the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management says the fire is in a rugged area, and heavy winds Monday and Tuesday have made it difficult to suppress.

“It’s also burning through dense fuel, chaparral, really thick vegetation," Davila said. "So that, one, is creating a hazard in itself for fire crews. They’re also up against the wind, the winds are really heavy today”

The fire is 5 percent contained, and at least one community has been evacuated by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.
