A historic liquor store in the Melrose District near downtown Phoenix was saved from destruction Monday night as the owners of the property canceled a demolition permit they had for it.
Phoenix historic preservation officer Michelle Dodds said owners wanted to avoid a lengthy battle over the store after a 30-day hold was placed on the demolition.
“They decided to reconsider, and said they would withdraw their demolition request if the commission withdrew their designation, and so that’s what happened, which was a good thing, because now the commission members and the council members can have a dialogue," Dodds said.
Dodds says that dialogue will focus on how to save the building.
