The Hamilton High School football hazing scandal moved ahead by a step this week when the Chandler Police Department made recommendations to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
The department thinks the team’s former Head Coach Steve Belles and Principal Ken James should be charged with child abuse and failure to report a crime.
Earlier, three players were arrested for allegedly committing crimes of sexual assault and kidnapping against teammates. In their positions, Belles and James were required to be mandatory reporters and tell law enforcement officials what they knew. According to police, that was not done.
To learn more about the general process — without focusing specifically on the Hamilton case — we spoke with Tempe attorney Scott Halverson.
