Glendale recently embarked on a long-term mission to develop its historic downtown, and the city may transform a vacant building into an incubator for local artists.
The incubator would go in the old St. Vincent de Paul thrift store, which is a 7,000-square-foot building owned by the city. The project would feature artist studios, a gallery, meeting space, and a coffee or wine bar.
It’s been proven that the arts draw people, said Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Glendale’s arts and culture program manager.
“Whenever you have artists working in spaces and creating, that just automatically creates an energy," Vahabzadeh said.
The city is still gathering information about the project, Vahabzadeh said. If it goes forward, Glendale would have to upgrade the building, and it would take a year or two before the incubator opens.
