The Pima County Board of Supervisors formed a special advisory committee Tuesday to explore the possibility of implementing a new sales tax.
County spokesman Mark Evans said the county has attempted to implement a sales tax at least twice in the last 20 years, but it hasn’t happened yet because approving a sales tax requires a unanimous vote.
Evans says the tax is being considered now to help with road repair and property tax reduction.
“We’ve got a high property tax rate and we’ve got some problems with the conditions of our roads, we’ve gotta raise some revenue and get those roads fixed," Evans said. "We’re doing it with property taxes currently, but if we can do it better with a sales tax this committee will explore that option and present it to the board and then it’ll be up to the board to decide.”
Evans said he expected the board to make its decisions prior to the county drafting its fiscal year 2019 budget.
