Last week a sewage line called the International Outfall Interceptor between Mexico and Nogales sprung a leak, causing sewage to spill into the Santa Cruz River.
Santa Cruz County Public Health official Jeff Terrell said the leaking sewage is now under control.
“They have successfully installed the bypass and diverted the sewage around the partial breach and back into the IOI further downstream and is now being diverted into the wastewater treatment plant," Terrell said.
Terrell said the state Department of Environmental Quality is testing the waters of the Santa Cruz all the way through Pinal and Pima Counties. He added that the monsoon rains are making repair of the damaged pipe more difficult.
