And as the fight over the border wall continues, another one of President Trump’s plans for our southern border is also hitting some obstacles.
On Jan. 25, just a few days after his inauguration, President Trump directed the Department of Homeland Security to hire an additional 15,000 immigration officers and border patrol agents.
But a new report from the Office of the Inspector General shows they are encountering some serious problems in how long it will take to hire this many new officers and agents — and if they even need them.
This new report shows that DHS hasn’t proven that there’s even a need for hiring 15,000 officers and agents, and that it would require more than 1.2 million applicants to fill the positions if their current hiring and attrition rates continue.
So to understand some of these challenges more, we speak with Eric Katz, senior correspondent with Government Executive, who covered this Inspector General report.
