Reporter Digs Into Phoenix's Cold Case Murders

Cold cases conjure images of late night television and shows like "CSI," "48 Hours" and "Unsolved Mysteries." We think of hardened detectives digging into gritty crimes —and never finding answers.

In all of that, we can forget that cold cases involve real people, real murders and they happen right here in the Valley.

Freelance reporter Sean Holstege spent years digging into the world of cold cases here in Arizona, and his new cover story in The Phoenix New Times, “ Hot Nights, Cold Cases” looks at the question: Why is Phoenix a "capital" of unsolved murders?

I spoke with Holstege recently about his reporting on this, and I asked him to walk us through the two cases he uses to tell this story of cold cases here in the Valley and why they didn’t go anywhere.
