The debate over so-called sanctuary cities has ramped up with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice determined to crack down on undocumented immigration.
Sessions has established narrow criteria for how to define sanctuary cities, and his “stick” is federal funding, which could potentially be withheld from cities that don’t comply with the DOJ and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has filed suit against the Trump administration about the policy shift.
Another city that has been under the DOJ spotlight is Albuquerque, New Mexico.
