Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has spoken out against the white supremacists who protested the removal of Confederate memorials in Virginia this weekend. But Ducey is not taking a stand against the six confederate memorials in Arizona.
In a tweet on Sunday, Ducey said that he “categorically condemns” the hate groups that marched in Charlottesville, Virginia. But he also said, “it’s not my desire or mission to tear down any monuments or memorials.”
State Rep. Reginald Bolding, Arizona’s only African-American state lawmaker, is part of the movement to remove these symbols. They’re not asking the governor to issue an executive order, he said.
“What we’re asking the governor to do is to use his power and his leverage to allow the public to truly have a meeting and a hearing so we can get to that point,” Bolding said.
The Confederate memorials across Arizona include one in front of the state Capitol and monuments commemorating a Civil War skirmish at Picacho Peak.
