Four gay men and 12 transgender women crossed the border into Nogales last week and immediately presented themselves to immigration authorities to apply for asylum.
The group, calling themselves Caravana Trans-Gay Migrante — or LGBTQ migrant caravan — journeyed for months from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Mexico fleeing what they say is persecution in their home countries.
The Transgender Law Center was there when the women and men turned themselves in, and we’re joined by Flor Bermudez, the center’s legal director for more on this.
