Along the side of Superstition Freeway at East Peralta road, there’s a stop light and small monument surrounded by railroad ties. On Thursday afternoon, the face of the monument was completely obscured with white feathers and black tar melting in the sun.
According to a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, the monument was created by the Daughters of the Confederacy to commemorate Jefferson Davis and moved to its current location in 1962.
John Rogers said his group sometimes maintains the monument, but they will wait until after President Donald Trump’s appearance in Phoenix on Tuesday to restore it.
"At this point if we went and cleaned it up it would just draw attention to it,” Rogers said. Rogers said the group honors its ancestors who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War.
The Department of Public Safety visited the site Thursday. A spokesperson said DPS is in the early stages of an investigation.
